Privacy Policy

How CoastAdapt collects, uses, and protects information about its users.

Last updated: September 13, 2026

CRI is committed to protecting the privacy of CoastAdapt users. This Privacy Statement explains what information is collected when you use CoastAdapt, how it is used, and the choices available to you. It is written to be consistent with Canadian privacy principles under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

1. Information We Collect

CoastAdapt does not require or offer user accounts, logins, or profiles. The platform is designed to be browsed and searched without providing personal information.

When you use CoastAdapt, we may automatically collect limited technical and usage information, such as:

  • pages and resources viewed;
  • search terms and filters used to navigate the resource registry;
  • general device and browser information (e.g., browser type, operating system);
  • approximate location derived from IP address (e.g., city/region level); and
  • referring website and links clicked, including links to external resources.

This information is collected through standard web analytics tools and is not used to identify individual users personally.

2. How We Use This Information

Information collected is used to:

  • understand how CoastAdapt is used, so the platform, resource registry, and navigation can be improved;
  • identify gaps in resource coverage (for example, by region or topic);
  • monitor platform performance and troubleshoot technical issues; and
  • report aggregate, non-identifying usage statistics to project funders (Natural Resources Canada) as part of standard program reporting.

We do not sell, rent, or trade usage information to third parties.

3. Cookies and Analytics

CoastAdapt may use cookies or similar technologies to support analytics and basic site functionality (for example, remembering filter preferences during a browsing session). You can adjust your browser settings to block or delete cookies; doing so may affect some site features. Where required, CoastAdapt will present a cookie notice describing the specific tools in use and how to manage preferences.

4. External Links

CoastAdapt links to third-party websites and resources. Once you leave CoastAdapt, this Privacy Statement no longer applies. We encourage you to review the privacy practices of any external site you visit.

5. Data Retention

Aggregate usage and analytics data is retained only as long as needed to support platform improvement and program reporting, after which it is deleted or retained only in de-identified, aggregate form.

6. Your Rights

Because CoastAdapt does not collect personal information tied to an identifiable individual under normal use, most privacy rights (such as access or correction requests) are not applicable to current site activity. If you believe personal information about you has been collected inappropriately, or if you have questions about our privacy practices, please contact us using the details below. You also have the right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you believe your privacy rights have been affected.

7. Future Changes

CoastAdapt is under active development. If future versions introduce user accounts, contact forms, newsletter sign-up, or other features that collect personal information, this Privacy Statement will be updated in advance to describe what is collected, why, how it is stored and protected, and what choices users have — consistent with PIPEDA’s consent and purpose-limitation requirements.
