Supporting Canadian Coastal Communities Adapt to Climate Change

CoastAdapt has a simple purpose: making information and resources specific to our coastlines easier to access, in one place

As a national initiative co-funded by Natural Resources Canada through the Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities (CRCC) Program, CoastAdapt helps communities and practitioners across Canada navigate resources and tools that can support their coastal adaptation journey. It serves as a trusted hub of credible, evidence-based resources, tools, and guidance to support every stage of the adaptation cycle, from assessing risks and setting priorities to planning, implementing, and adjusting actions.

Whether you are developing policy, planning infrastructure, managing natural assets, supporting community resilience, conducting research, or building local adaptation capacity, CoastAdapt helps you find relevant, region-specific information to make more informed decisions and take effective action.

Our Objectives

  • Develop a national platform that connects users across Canada with relevant resources on coastal adaptation.

  • Respond to the information needs of small, remote, rural, and Indigenous coastal communities, particularly those with fewer resources, to help them understand and adapt to coastal change.

  • Establish a stewardship plan for the long-term sustainability of CoastAdapt, beyond the life of this project.

Who is Behind CoastAdapt

CoastAdapt is a national initiative led by the Climate Risk Institute (CRI), in collaboration with DHI Water & Environment Inc. (DHI) and CLIMAtlantic. It is supported by a national network of regional organizations, technical experts, Indigenous partners, and adaptation practitioners from across Canada, with additional strategic and technical guidance from a National Advisory Committee and Scientific Advisory Committee.

Regional Coordinators bring local knowledge, priorities, and networks to the initiative, helping ensure the platform reflects the realities of coastal communities in every region. They include the Nunavut Association of Municipalities (NAM), the Cree Nation Government (CNG), the Government of the Northwest Territories, and the Government of Manitoba in the Arctic; CLIMAtlantic in the Atlantic; Conservation Ontario in the Great Lakes; the Fraser Basin Council (FBC) and Indigenous Coastal Climate Coalition in the Pacific; and the Conseils régionaux de l'environnement and Comités ZIP in the St. Lawrence.

The platform is being developed through a collaborative approach, drawing on practical experience and diverse perspectives of coastal communities across Canada.

CoastAdapt is funded by Natural Resources Canada through the Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities (CRCC) Program.

How We Curate Content

CoastAdapt is a curated resource hub, not a repository of everything available on coastal adaptation. Resources are selected to help users find credible, relevant, and practical information that supports coastal adaptation in Canada.

Resources are considered against the following criteria:

  • Relevant to coastal climate adaptation in Canada.

  • Reflective of the diverse environmental, cultural, governance, and community contexts across Canada's coastal regions.

  • Produced by reliable and recognized organizations, regional experts, or authoritative sources.

  • Practical and applicable to real-world planning, decision-making, and implementation.

  • Accessible to a broad range of users.

  • Current and maintained where possible.

Resources are added on an ongoing basis and existing content is periodically reviewed to maintain quality and relevance. While every effort is made to keep information current, users should refer to the original source for the latest versions of external resources.

Acknowledgements

The CoastAdapt team gratefully acknowledges the organizations, advisory committee members, subject matter experts, practitioners, and regional partners who have contributed their time, expertise, and feedback throughout the development of the platform.

We extend particular thanks to the Regional Coordinators, whose on-the-ground knowledge and connections across Canada's coastlines have been instrumental in shaping a platform that reflects the diverse realities and needs of .coastal communities it serves. Their contributions have helped shape CoastAdapt into a practical resource for Canada's coastal adaptation community.
